Doris Strickland
I am the wife of Ollie Young Bear. My husband is an Indian man and I am a white woman. My family has a ranch south of Bentrock. I have one son and one daughter. My husband graduated from Montana State University Bozeman. Many people think my husband shows “what hard work will get you.” I believe that Indians should have just as many rights as white men. Indians should not have to work harder than white people do to achieve the same things. My husband has had to work very hard to achieve the same things as white men do. Many whites regard my husband as higher than other Indians. But other Indians do not think of him as any higher than them. Some Indians even look down on my husband.

Being a white woman who knows the culture of Native Americans, how do you feel towards the idea of the UND mascot being the Souix? What tribe is your husband a member of?
Hey I'm the fifth jury member. What's your view on the mascot? Do you think UND should be able to keep it or should have to make a new one. Thanks!

I dont think that this sitution with my veiw has anything to do with my husband. He and I are just fine. My veiw is that the kids are not being made fun of but honored.
thanks doris. I think that we should persuade as many people as we can to be on our side for this situatuon. it is very offensive and we need to stand for what we think is Right!

How can you say the mascots are demeaning when a bunch of chief's do not even think it is a pick deal. Its the students that are going to that school that are making it such a huge issue and if they didn't like it why do they go their? Without these mascots people wouldn't even remember the Native American people. There heritage would be lost. These people are just trying to honor the founders of their land. There is nothing wrong with that.

I think that you are just overwhelmed with emotions. I think that a "drive by" would be to harsh. I do however hate that thing that they call a person. He should have no power in this town anymore. I think that we should ally and join forces in takiing out the "fighting Sioux" mascot.

You do have a point about what happened to my servant. It was a terrible thing and I am deprived by the situation. My brother, who committed this act, took his own life because HE didn't want to deal with the consequences. I do see you're point on the issue.

Thanks for responding back to me on your view of the UND mascot. When you say that you don’t support the mascot, I agree! My tribe is the Standing Rock Sioux, and we have historically lived in North Dakota. Since I was born and raised on our reservation, I share the same views as the tribe. We believe that the mascot is degrading and misinforming towards the Native American race. There are so many other mascots available to use and mascots involving Native Americans shouldn’t have to be used. Thanks for supporting the removal of the UND mascot!

You know, I have started to change my viewpoint. What my brother did to these women was terribly wrong. His actions have lead me to help the Native Americans. Also, I have grown from this experience and I no longer believe I am better than others.

Hello Doris. I do feel that the mascot should be changed. I cannot speak directly from a Navtive American's point of view but I can see how it would be offensive. As a student of UND, I want our school to be respectful of other people's feelings.
