However, i think that the mascot doesnt need to be touched at all. We dont need to make any changes or spice it up. Our icon of the fighting sioux is not very cartoonistic or silly looking. its just a typical, nicely designed picture of a sioux indian. I agree, some other teams should perhaps revamp their mascot and maybe make it a little less- offensive looking..
Take it easy bro,
Kris PorterBaileyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12219205558816781455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8835334481904753344.post-52279262839777312712007-11-02T06:56:00.000-07:002007-11-02T06:56:00.000-07:00Mr.FoyI am all for negotiating the terms of this m...Mr.Foy
I am all for negotiating the terms of this mascot. I would much rather come to an agreement, then vote to use it or not use it. I do believe the intentions are not all bad to use our great name. My worries come in with how much respect other people will have for it. I can talk to my people and get the input of them, we can try to come up with alternatives to this issue. I have much respect for they way you approached me on this subject. However, when you say that you are in support of the mascot, I have to disagree with you. My tribe is the Standing Rock Siuox and we have historically lived in North Dakota, somewhat near the University. Our stance on the mascot is that we don’t support it. Since I was born and raised on our reservation, this is my view too. We believe that this mascot is degrading and misinforming towards the Native American race and that there are many other mascots available to use.
- Amy Red OakRachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14838942271228411361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8835334481904753344.post-27058222118288389022007-11-01T06:53:00.000-07:002007-11-01T06:53:00.000-07:00Gunther,As the chairwoman I do know that it is wit...Gunther,
As the chairwoman I do know that it is within my power to make some changes and I am trying to do all that I can for my people. At the time when it was my turn to give an opinion on this subject, I was out of town and I apologize for that. I will try to make it within all my power to see that something is done rightly about this problem. It indeed is a pressure on our society as Native Americans.
~Myra PetersonBreezyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14963783917529508420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8835334481904753344.post-58152487087995692412007-11-01T06:45:00.000-07:002007-11-01T06:45:00.000-07:00Gunther Foy-As Standing Rock Tribal Chairman, I th...Gunther Foy-
As Standing Rock Tribal Chairman, I think that the settlement of UND's logo and nickname unfairly shifts the burden of retiring the nickname to the tribes. In the Native American community, these names, mascots, and logos are offending many of our people and causing a disturbance in our Tribes. But since we have been given the responsibility to solve this matter, I think that this might be the only way to really resolve this problem. I think that many people believe that this is an opportunity to show the world that we, as Native Americans, are just as human as any other persons in the world. It would be nice to be at peace with all those that are involved with the matter but I guess I don't see it realistically happening. I wish that it could be that simple to just use our tribe as a representative of the University of North Dakota but I dont see it happening that way. The Native Americans will still be in the learning of our history. I think that we should ban these names and mascots. I think that we can still come to these schools and teach students about our traditions and customs but I don't see myself and the Standing Rock Sioux changing our position opposing the nickname.
-Ron His Horse Is LightningMeganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01097450150106725431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8835334481904753344.post-83528597149095956742007-10-31T06:42:00.000-07:002007-10-31T06:42:00.000-07:00Gunther:Hi!
